Jamaican, Caribbean, and Southern fare in a charming space in Chelsea.

It was originally the Spanish word for savage, used to describe cattle that had escaped into the wild. Cimarron, or simply maroon. But today the maroon is synonymous with centuries of struggle and triumph. Maroons must be redefined to exemplify the men and women who fought for freedom and established their own community. The Maroons were the first revolutionaries. They were spiritual warriors.

Maroons can be found in history as far back as the 1500s in Spain, Panama, and Mexico, where their fierce guerilla tactics - utilizing knowledge of the land and African war tactics - wreaked havoc on the slave owners' business. Spain was forced to strike peace treaties with certain Maroon bands to ensure that business could continue on these plantations. But no maroon uprising had a greater impact than the one led by Nanny in Jamaica in the 1730s. It all but forced the British army to flee Jamaica and enter a peace treaty in 1739 with the slaves and former slaves, granting them tax-exempt status and relinquishing land to the black freedom fighters. Today Nanny is a Jamaican heroine and Nanny Town, located in one of the highest and least accessible areas of the Blue Mountains in Jamaica, is still a part of the country's rich history.

The spirit of Nanny and all of those who fought and died for freedom lives on through the Maroons.
